Abdoulaye Konaté is a prominent contemporary artist from Mali, internationally acclaimed for his striking, large-scale textile installations. Born in Diré, a town in the Tombouctou Region, Konaté initially studied painting at the Institut National des Arts in Bamako. He later pursued advanced artistic training at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba, where he lived for seven years. This dual education exposed him to both traditional Malian techniques and international contemporary art practices.

Upon returning to Mali, Konaté shifted his focus from painting to textile work. He began working with bazin—a dyed woven cotton fabric integral to West African daily life and culture. Through cutting, sewing, and layering thousands of colored strips of fabric into vibrant, monumental tapestries, he addresses profound geopolitical, social, and environmental issues. His works tackle subjects such as the Sahel drought, the HIV/AIDS epidemic, religious extremism, the legacy of colonialism, and human rights violations, transforming local materials into universal statements.

Beyond his studio practice, Konaté has been a vital force in Malian cultural administration. He served as the Director of the Palais de la Culture in Bamako and played a pivotal role in founding the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers Multimédia Balla Fasseké Kouyaté in Bamako. As its general director, he has profoundly shaped the next generation of West African creatives, cementing his status not just as an artist, but as a cultural leader.
