Professor Ablade Glover ( Emmanuel Ablade Glover ) is a seminal figure in West African art, celebrated for his vibrant, impasto-heavy canvases that capture the bustling energy, spirit, and color of Ghana. Born in Accra, his early education spanned three continents. He began his studies in Kumasi, Ghana, before winning a scholarship to study textile design at London’s Central School of Art and Design in 1959. He later studied art education at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, where a teacher suggested he use a palette knife—a tool that would ultimately define his signature textural style. He completed a master’s degree at Kent State University and earned a PhD in fine arts from Ohio State University in 1974.
Returning to Ghana, Glover spent the next two decades teaching at the College of Art at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, eventually becoming the Department Head and Dean of the School of Fine Arts. His canvases are a love affair with Africa, using energetic, heavily textured applications of warm oil paints to depict sprawling market scenes, crowded lorry stations, shantytowns, and elegant Ghanaian women. From a distance, his swirling, kaleidoscopic colors resolve into highly realistic and dynamic scenes of everyday life.
Beyond his painting, he has been a tireless champion for African artists. He founded the Artists Alliance Gallery in Accra, creating a vital international platform for displaying and preserving both contemporary Ghanaian art and traditional artifacts.
