About & Heritage
Founded in 1865, the original Acropolis Museum was established to house findings from excavations on the sacred rock of the Acropolis. As the collection grew, it became clear that a larger space was required. The new, iconic museum building , designed to offer a transparent experience with views of the Parthenon, opened in 2009. The museum’s mission is to house and protect the antiquities of the Acropolis, spanning from the Mycenaean period to the end of Roman and Early Byzantine Athens. It serves as a vital bridge between the modern visitor and the cradle of Western civilization. The current building stands on the southern slope of the Acropolis, allowing visitors to walk over visible ancient excavations beneath the glass floors. Its circular exhibition path guides guests through the history of the sacred hill, focusing on the Archaic period, the Parthenon, and other significant sanctuary findings. Today, it is recognized globally as one of the most significant archaeological museums, dedicated to research, conservation, and the education of the public.
Acropolis Museum Opening Overview
The museum operates on a seasonal schedule. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early or in the late afternoon to avoid peak crowds. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.

Summer Season (April 1 – October 31):
Monday: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Tuesday – Sunday: 9:00 am – 8:00 pm (Fridays until 10:00 pm)
Winter Season (November 1 – March 31):
Monday – Thursday: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Friday: 9:00 am – 10:00 pm
Saturday – Sunday: 9:00 am – 8:00 pm
Special Closures & Private Visit Policy
Closed on January 1st, Orthodox Easter Sunday, May 1st, and December 25th and 26th.
Open to Public (General admission). Private guided tours are available through third-party operators, though these do not grant exclusive access to the landmark itself.
