About & Heritage
Launched in 2007 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Art Dubai was established to provide an international platform for the artistic communities of the Middle East and the broader Global South. Over its two-decade history, the fair has systematically challenged the Western-centric art narrative by championing diverse, cross-cultural dialogues and presenting works from underserved geographical territories. It serves as an essential meeting point for international collectors, institutional directors, and local creative minds. Structurally, the fair is divided into major specialized gallery sectors—Contemporary, Modern, Bawwaba (meaning gateway, highlighting solo presentations), and Art Dubai Digital, which focuses on the intersection of technology and fine art. Beyond its commercial marketplace, Art Dubai operates an extensive, non-profit educational and commissioning framework, including the Art Dubai Fellowships and the Campus Art Dubai mentorship program. The fair is also celebrated for hosting the Global Art Forum, the region’s largest annual transdisciplinary conference. By establishing deep roots in the emirate, it has driven the economic growth of the Alserkal Avenue district and Dubai’s evolution into a key pillar of the global art market.
