Centre Pompidou
Paris
About & Heritage
Initiated in 1969 by French President Georges Pompidou and officially inaugurated on January 31, 1977, the Centre Pompidou was conceived as a revolutionary multidisciplinary cultural center. Designed by architects Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers, and Gianfranco Franchini, the high-tech structural steel and glass building turned architectural conventions inside-out, placing functional utilities—pipes, air ducts, and escalators—on the exterior facade in vibrant color codes. The venue houses the Musée National d’Art Moderne, which stands as the largest collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe, comprising over 120,000 works spanning visual arts, architecture, design, and new media. Its primary mission is to democratize culture, foster interdisciplinary dialogue, and support contemporary artistic production across fine art, music, literature, and cinema. Located in the Beaubourg district of Paris, the complex also includes the Public Information Library (Bpi) and the IRCAM acoustic research center. Over five decades, it has remained a global symbol of avant-garde culture and architectural audacity.
- Note : The Centre Pompidou operates an expanding global network including Centre Pompidou-Málaga (Spain), Centre Pompidou Shanghai (West Bund Museum Project, China), KANAL - Centre Pompidou (Brussels, Belgium), and planned projects in Saudi Arabia (AlUla) and Jersey City (USA).
