Fallingwater
Pittsburgh
About & Heritage
Designed in 1935 by America’s most celebrated architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, Fallingwater was commissioned as a weekend retreat for the prominent Kaufmann family of Pittsburgh. Unlike traditional homes built overlooking a waterfall, Wright audaciously cantilevered the residence directly over the active falls of Bear Run, seamlessly integrating the built environment with nature. The house is considered the ultimate expression

of Wright’s philosophy of “organic architecture,” where human life and the natural world harmoniously intersect. Upon its completion in 1939, it instantly became an architectural icon, celebrated worldwide and featured on the cover of Time magazine. In 1963, Edgar Kaufmann Jr. entrusted the house, its original furnishings, and its pristine surrounding landscape to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. Today, Fallingwater operates as a premier cultural art center and museum, dedicated to preserving Wright’s masterpiece while advancing environmental conservation and architectural education. In 2019, it was inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List alongside seven other Wright sites. The mission of Fallingwater is to inspire visitors through the immersive experience of Wright’s genius in its natural setting.
