Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze
Florence
About & Heritage
Founded in 1784 by Pietro Leopoldo, Grand Duke of Tuscany, the Galleria dell’Accademia was originally established as a teaching collection for students of the adjacent Accademia delle Arti del Disegno (Academy of Fine Arts). The institution was designed to showcase landmark examples of painting and sculpture to guide young artists in classical technique. Its identity was permanently transformed in 1873 when Michelangelo’s iconic David was transferred from the Piazza della Signoria into the museum’s specially constructed Tribuna designed by Emilio De Fabris to protect it from weather and damage. Beyond housing the world’s most celebrated Renaissance masterpiece, the museum holds an extraordinary collection of 13th- to 16th-century Florentine paintings, including works by Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and Paolo Uccello. It also houses the Museum of Musical Instruments (Museo degli Strumenti Musicali), featuring priceless historical instruments from the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini, including items crafted by Antonio Stradivari. Together with its vast collection of 19th-century plaster casts in the Gipsoteca Bartolini, the Accademia stands as a world-renowned monument to Renaissance humanism and artistic craftsmanship.
