About & Heritage
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is a landmark museum project currently nearing completion on Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi. Designed by Pritzker-prize-winning architect Frank Gehry, the museum features a dynamic, non-linear architectural design inspired by traditional Middle Eastern wind towers and coastal surroundings. A collaboration between the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism, the museum serves as an “equal relationship” project where the collection and building are owned by Abu Dhabi while drawing on the foundation’s international expertise. The museum’s mission is to spark interest in global modern and contemporary art, with a specific curatorial focus on West Asia, North Africa, and South Asia (WANASA). It aims to offer a platform for cross-cultural dialogue, scholarly research, and innovative artistic production. Spanning approximately 30,000 square meters, it is set to be the largest of the Guggenheim museums. The institution emphasizes a “somatic” rather than strictly chronological experience, inviting visitors to engage with art through diverse, non-linear narratives. Scheduled for completion and opening in late 2026, it stands as a central pillar of the Saadiyat Cultural District, complementing other world-class institutions in the region.
- Note : As the museum is a new institution, "iconic highlights" reflect the architectural significance, collection focus, and the visionary project leaders.
