About & Heritage
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation was chartered in 1937 as an “educational corporation” dedicated to the promotion of art and the enlightenment of the public. Initially established as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, it served as a sanctuary for early abstract works collected by Solomon R. Guggenheim under the guidance of artist Hilla Rebay. In 1943, the foundation commissioned legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design a “temple of spirit” for the collection.
The resulting building, opened in 1959, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and an architectural masterpiece. Its iconic spiral ramp challenges traditional museum layouts, forcing a continuous dialogue between the viewer, the art, and the architecture. The museum’s mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret modern and contemporary art while fostering a global network of cultural exchange. Today, it remains a pillar of the international art world, bridging the legacy of early modernism with cutting-edge contemporary practice.
