Leopold Museum
Vienna
About & Heritage
The Leopold Museum, situated within Vienna’s vibrant MuseumsQuartier, is the definitive home of modern Austrian art. Opened to the public in 2001, the institution is built upon the extraordinary private collection of ophthalmologist Rudolf Leopold and his wife, Elisabeth. Over five decades, the couple systematically acquired over 8,300 works, rescuing many early 20th-century masterpieces from obscurity before the collection was transitioned into a public foundation with the support of the Austrian state in 1994. The museum’s striking architecture, designed by Laurids and Manfred Ortner, takes the form of a light-flooded, white limestone cube that offers sweeping panoramic views of imperial Vienna.
The museum’s mission is to chronicle the radical artistic shifts in Austria from 1880 to 1960, acting as the primary custodian of “Vienna 1900.” It holds the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of works by Expressionist master Egon Schiele, tracing his entire creative evolution. The collection is equally renowned for its monumental paintings by Gustav Klimt and raw psychological portraits by Richard Gerstl and Oskar Kokoschka. Beyond painting, the museum celebrates the democratic design principles of the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop) and Jugendstil (Art Nouveau), showcasing exquisite furniture, glass, and decorative arts by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser. By juxtaposing its permanent historical collection with contemporary exhibitions, the Leopold Museum provides an unmatched narrative of the avant-garde movements that dismantled imperial aesthetics and shaped modern Europe.
