About & Heritage
Originally constructed as a fortress in the late 12th century under King Philip II, the Louvre evolved over centuries into a magnificent royal palace, reflecting the architectural shifts of successive French monarchs. Following the French Revolution, the National Assembly decreed that the Louvre should be transformed into a public museum to showcase the nation’s masterpieces. It officially opened its doors on August 10, 1793, with an exhibition of 537 paintings. Under Napoleon Bonaparte, the collection expanded exponentially through military conquests, temporarily renaming the institution the Musée Napoléon. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the museum continued to grow its holding across diverse curatorial departments, spanning from Egyptian antiquities to Islamic art. A landmark moment occurred in 1989 when architect I.M. Pei unveiled the Grand Louvre modernization project, featuring the now-iconic glass and metal pyramid entrance. The mission of the Louvre is to preserve, protect, and pass on its unparalleled collection of world art and antiquities to future generations. As a universal museum, it seeks to foster human understanding across distinct cultures and eras by making human creativity accessible. Today, it stands as the world’s largest and most visited art museum, guarding over 9,000 years of global creative history.
