About & Heritage
Founded by filmmaker George Lucas and businesswoman Mellody Hobson, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opened its doors to the public on September 22, 2026. Situated in Los Angeles’s Exposition Park, the 300,000-square-foot institution was designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects as a fluid, cloud-like structure harmonizing with an expansive 11-acre park and gardens designed by Mia Lehrer/Studio-MLA. The museum is a first-of-its-kind cultural center dedicated to celebrating visual storytelling across centuries and cultures. Its permanent collection holds over 40,000 works spanning prehistoric cave paintings, fine art, illustration, comics, photography, and cinematic arts, positioning traditionally underrepresented mediums alongside classical painting and sculpture. The museum features 100,000 square feet of gallery space, continuous film screenings, a free research library, and an expansive educational framework. Its mission is to honor humanity’s stories and the artists who illustrate them, fostering a space where people from all walks of life can see their world reflected, demonstrating how illustrated storytelling acts as a universal language that shapes beliefs and creates community.
