Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP)
Seattle
About & Heritage
The Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) was founded in 2000 by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, originally launching as the Experience Music Project (EMP). Dedicated to contemporary popular culture, its mission is to make creative expression a life-changing force by offering experiences that inspire and connect our communities. The museum’s iconic, sweeping deconstructivist building was designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry. Covered in colorful sheet metal, the structure’s fragmented, wavy forms were inspired by the image of a smashed Fender Stratocaster guitar—a direct homage to the rebellious spirit of rock ‘n’ roll and Seattle native Jimi Hendrix. In 2016, the institution expanded its scope and officially rebranded as MoPOP to reflect its broader focus on movies, science fiction, fantasy, video games, and wearable fashion. Situated at the base of the Space Needle in the Seattle Center, the museum houses over 100,000 artifacts. It is celebrated for highly interactive installations, such as the Sound Lab, and houses the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.
