About & Heritage
The Nairobi National Museum traces its origins to 1910 when the East Africa and Uganda Natural History Society was established to preserve and study the region’s rich biodiversity and cultural history. In 1929, the colonial government erected a dedicated building at Museum Hill, initially named the Coryndon Museum in honor of Sir Robert Coryndon, a former Governor of Kenya. Following Kenya’s independence in 1963, the institution was renamed the National Museum, expanding its role under the leadership of notable figures like paleoanthropologists Louis and Richard Leakey. Today, as the headquarters for the National Museums of Kenya, its mission is to collect, preserve, study, document, and present Kenya’s past and present cultural and natural heritage. The museum houses extraordinary collections spanning paleontology, archaeology, ethnography, and contemporary East African art. Between 2005 and 2008, the museum underwent a massive, multi-million dollar modernization program, creating expansive new galleries and a commercial center. The venue stands as a global center for human evolutionary research, famously holding some of the most critical Plio-Pleistocene hominid fossils ever discovered.
