About & Heritage
Founded in 1969 with the help of Norman and Molly Rockwell, the Norman Rockwell Museum is dedicated to the enjoyment, study, and preservation of the artist’s work. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, it stands as the most popular year-round cultural attraction in the Berkshires. The museum’s mission is to communicate with a worldwide audience the life, art, and spirit of Norman Rockwell and the broader field of American illustration.

In 1993, the museum moved to its present 36-acre site overlooking the Housatonic River Valley, housed within an internationally renowned gallery building designed by architect Robert A.M. Stern. The museum holds the world’s largest and most significant collection of Rockwell’s art, containing nearly 1,000 original paintings and drawings. Rockwell lived the last 25 years of his life in Stockbridge, and his original art studio was meticulously moved to the museum grounds, where it remains open to the public from May through October. Beyond the art, the venue houses the Norman Rockwell Archives, a monumental collection of over 100,000 items including reference photographs, fan mail, and business documents. By contextualizing Rockwell’s unique contributions to popular culture and social commentary, the museum explores the evolving American identity through illustration.
