About & Heritage
Founded in 1935 under the direction of Grace McCann Morley, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) was the first museum on the American West Coast devoted solely to 20th-century art. Originally housed in the War Memorial Veterans Building, the institution steadily grew its collection of modern masterpieces, pioneering the recognition of photography and film as legitimate art forms early in its history. In 1995, SFMOMA relocated to the vibrant South of Market (SoMa) district into a landmark postmodern building designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, featuring its signature iconic central oculus. In 2016, the museum underwent a massive, transformative expansion led by the architectural firm Snøhetta, tripling its gallery space and making it one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art in the United States. The expansion also allowed SFMOMA to host the internationally renowned Doris and Donald Fisher Collection. SFMOMA’s mission is to share the art of our time with passion and purpose. The museum is dedicated to fostering global perspectives, championing the work of living artists from the Bay Area and around the world, and functioning as a vibrant cultural center that inspires creativity and deepens public understanding of contemporary culture.

Open to the public six days a week, with free admission to the museum’s ground-floor public spaces and free admission at all times for visitors aged 18 and under. Advance online ticket purchase is highly recommended.
