About & Heritage
The Scottish National Gallery stands in the heart of Edinburgh on The Mound, housed in a neoclassical building designed by renowned Scottish architect William Henry Playfair. Construction began when Prince Albert laid the foundation stone in 1850, and the gallery opened its doors to the public in 1859. The institution’s mission is to care for, research, and display the national collection of Scottish and international fine art, fostering public engagement, inspiration, and education across generations. Its world-class permanent collection spans from the Early Renaissance to the late 19th century, featuring iconic masterpieces by Titian, Rembrandt, Velázquez, Vermeer, Turner, and Impressionist masters alongside an expansive collection of Scottish fine art. Following a transformative major capital project (The Art of Scotland project), the gallery expanded its physical footprint into Princes Street Gardens, creating new subterranean, light-filled exhibition spaces dedicated specifically to historic Scottish art. Today, as part of National Galleries Scotland, the museum remains one of Edinburgh’s foremost architectural landmarks and a key cultural destination for international art lovers.

Scottish National Gallery Opening Overview
Open daily year-round with free general admission to the permanent collection. Special temporary exhibitions may carry an admission ticket charge. Last entry to the building is at 4:45 PM.
