About & Heritage
Tate Modern is Britain’s national museum of international modern and contemporary art. It is housed in the former Bankside Power Station, a monumental industrial landmark designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Since its opening in May 2000, it has become one of the most visited modern art galleries in the world. The building’s transformation, led by architects Herzog & de Meuron, retained the iconic 115-meter chimney and the cavernous Turbine Hall, which serves as a unique site for large-scale site-specific commissions. In 2016, the museum expanded further with the Blavatnik Building, a striking 10-story tower that added 60% more display space. Tate’s mission is to promote public knowledge, understanding, and enjoyment of British art from 1500 to the present and international modern art from 1900. The collection includes masterpieces of Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art, alongside cutting-edge contemporary installations. Tate Modern is celebrated for its radical approach to curation, often grouping works by theme rather than strict chronology. It serves as a vital hub for cultural exchange, education, and social discourse. The museum also pioneered “The Tanks,” the world’s first gallery space dedicated permanently to live art, performance, and film. Today, it remains a symbol of London’s cultural regeneration and a global leader in the conservation and presentation of modern visual culture.

Tate Modern Opening Overview
General admission is free and provides access to the collection displays. Tickets are required for special temporary exhibitions. Advance booking is recommended, especially for high-profile shows.
