About & Heritage
Founded in 1872 with an inaugural exhibition at the Yushima Seido Confucian shrine, the Tokyo National Museum (TNM) is the oldest and largest museum in Japan. Relocating to its current Ueno Park location in 1882, the institution has played a central role in the preservation and promotion of Japanese and Asian art. Originally operating under the Ministry of the Imperial Household, the museum was later rebranded following World War II to reflect its status as a public national institution. Its core mission is to collect, house, conserve, and exhibit a comprehensive collection of cultural properties and archaeological artifacts spanning Japan and the broader Asian continent.
Today, the museum manages a collection of over 120,000 items, including 89 designated National Treasures and over 600 Important Cultural Properties, making it the most significant collection of Japanese art in the world. The expansive campus features six distinct exhibition buildings, including the iconic Honkan (Japanese Art), the Toyokan (Asian Art), and the modern Gallery of Horyuji Treasures. Beyond its exhibitions, TNM leads international research, artifact restoration, and educational outreach to foster a global understanding of Eastern visual heritage.

The museum is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, with advanced online reservations recommended during high-profile special exhibitions. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.

Special Closures & Private Visit Policy
Closed every Monday. If a Japanese national holiday falls on a Monday, the museum remains open and closes the following Tuesday instead. Also closed for the New Year’s holiday (December 26 – January 1).
