About & Heritage
The Van Gogh Museum opened on June 2, 1973, designed by Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld, to permanently house the art collection amassed by Vincent van Gogh’s brother, Theo. Following Theo’s death, his widow Johanna van Gogh-Bonger tirelessly championed Vincent’s work, and her son, Vincent Willem van Gogh, eventually transferred the collection to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation, making it accessible to the public. The museum houses the largest collection of Van Gogh’s works in the world, including over 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 700 letters. Its core mission is to inspire a diverse audience with the life and work of Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries. Over the decades, the museum expanded to accommodate millions of global visitors, adding an elliptical exhibition wing by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa in 1999, and a modern glass entrance hall in 2015. Situated on Amsterdam’s Museumplein, it serves as an international center of excellence for the research, conservation, and presentation of 19th-century art, placing Van Gogh’s legacy in context alongside peers like Gauguin, Monet, and Toulouse-Lautrec.
- Note : The museum occasionally curates traveling exhibitions globally, such as the ( Meet Vincent van Gogh ) experience.
