About & Heritage
The origins of the Vatican Museums trace back to 1506, when Pope Julius II purchased the ancient marble sculpture Laocoön and His Sons after its discovery in a Roman vineyard and placed it on public view in the Belvedere Courtyard. Over more than five centuries, successive Popes built upon this foundation, amassing one of the world’s greatest collections of art, antiquities, and spiritual treasures. The sprawling complex encompasses 54 individual galleries and includes renowned monuments such as the Sistine Chapel, the Raphael Rooms, the Gallery of Maps, and the Borgia Apartments. The mission of the Vatican Museums is to preserve, study, and display the extraordinary artistic and spiritual heritage entrusted to the Catholic Church, promoting dialogue between faith, culture, and humanity. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the venue serves as both a sacred sanctuary and an international beacon of human creativity. Its vast holdings bridge ancient Egyptian and Greco-Roman antiquities, Renaissance masterpieces, map collections, ethnographic artifacts, and 20th-century modern religious art. Every year, millions of visitors travel through its historic halls to experience an unbroken continuum of global artistic achievement.

Vatican Museums Opening Overview
Open Monday through Saturday with pre-booked timed entry tickets strongly encouraged to ensure access. Open on the final Sunday of each month with free admission. A strict modest dress code (covered shoulders and knees) is enforced throughout all galleries and chapels.

Closed most Sundays, as well as major Catholic religious holidays including Jan 1 (Solemnity of Mary), Jan 6 (Epiphany), Feb 11, Mar 19 (St. Joseph), Easter Sunday & Easter Monday, May 1, June 29 (St. Peter and St. Paul), Aug 15 (Assumption), Nov 1 (All Saints), and Dec 25 & 26 (Christmas & St. Stephen).
