About & Heritage
Established in London in 1993 by founder Jay Jopling, White Cube is one of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries. Its origins on Duke Street were revolutionary; the gallery began in a small, intimate room where no artist was ever shown more than once during its first decade. This “artist-led” philosophy nurtured the Young British Artists (YBAs) movement, propelling names like Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin to global fame. In 2006, Mason’s Yard opened as the first free-standing building in St James’s for 30 years, designed by MRJ Rundell & Associates on a former electricity sub-station site. In 2011, White Cube Bermondsey was launched, becoming Europe’s largest commercial gallery at 58,000 square feet. White Cube’s mission is to “make the contemporary historic,” providing museum-scale platforms for ambitious installations that challenge architectural and conceptual boundaries. Over three decades, the gallery has expanded from a singular, iconic white room into a global powerhouse representing over 60 international artists and estates. It remains a cornerstone of the London art scene, blending rigorous scholarship with a pioneering spirit to foster emerging talent and support established masters. The galleries function as vital civic spaces, offering public access to some of the most seminal works of the 21st century.
White Cube Opening Overview
Open to the public. Admission is free. Bermondsey is significantly larger and often hosts monumental installations, while Mason’s Yard offers a more focused, central London experience.
