Camille Claudel (1864–1943) was a French sculptor of immense talent whose work bridged the gap between naturalism and symbolism. For much of the 20th century, she was remembered primarily as the student, lover, and muse of Auguste Rodin, but modern art history recognizes her as a genius in her own right, capable of conveying profound emotion and narrative depth through stone and bronze.
Born in northern France, Claudel showed a precocious talent for modeling clay as a child. In 1881, her father moved the family to Paris so she could study art at the Académie Colarossi, one of the few places open to female students. In 1884, she began working in Rodin’s workshop. She became his most capable assistant, contributing to major works like The Gates of Hell and The Burghers of Calais. Their tumultuous romantic relationship lasted over a decade but ended in 1898 when Rodin refused to leave his long-term partner, Rose Beuret.
Claudel’s own work is characterized by a lyrical, often heartbreaking quality. Her masterpiece, The Mature Age (L’Âge mûr), is widely interpreted as an allegory of her breakup with Rodin, depicting a young woman pleading with an older man who is being led away by an old woman (death/age). Other major works include The Waltz (La Valse), which captures a couple in a swirling, intimate embrace, and Sakuntala.
Despite critical acclaim, Claudel struggled with financial independence and mental health. She grew increasingly paranoid, believing Rodin was plotting against her and stealing her ideas. She began to destroy many of her own statues. In 1913, shortly after her father’s death, her family had her committed to a psychiatric asylum. Despite doctors’ recommendations that she could be released, her mother and brother kept her confined for the remaining 30 years of her life. She died in obscurity in 1943 and was buried in a communal grave.
