Енес Билал (Serbian Cyrillic) | Enes Bilal (Father: Muhamed Bilal, a master tailor; Mother: Anna)
(born 1951) is a visionary French comic book creator, artist, and film director, globally renowned for his gritty, dystopian science fiction universes and his mastery of painted sequential art.
Born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, to a Bosnian father (who had been Marshal Tito’s tailor) and a Czech mother, Bilal moved to Paris at the age of nine. He did not speak French upon his arrival, and he used comic books as a way to learn the language. His artistic talent was quickly recognized, and in 1971, after winning a contest, he was introduced to René Goscinny, who hired him to work for the legendary Pilote magazine.
Bilal’s early career was defined by his collaboration with writer Pierre Christin. Together, they produced a series of acclaimed, politically charged graphic novels in the late 1970s and early 1980s, such as The Black Order Brigade and The Hunting Party, which dealt heavily with the Cold War and the complexities of Eastern European politics.
In 1980, Bilal began writing and illustrating his own magnum opus, the Nikopol Trilogy (The Carnival of Immortals, The Woman Trap, Cold Equator). This series established his signature aesthetic: a decaying, cyberpunk world rendered in stunning, textured paintings. He abandoned traditional ink-and-color comic techniques, opting instead for direct painting using acrylics, pastels, and gouache. His color palette is highly distinctive, dominated by ash greys, slate blues, and bruised purples, violently punctuated by stark reds and greens.
His later masterworks include the Monster Tetralogy (which reflects on the violent breakup of his native Yugoslavia) and the recent Bug series. Bilal’s artwork is highly coveted in the fine art world, with his original painted pages and canvases regularly setting auction records for European comic art at houses like Artcurial. He is also famous for inadvertently inventing the sport of “Chessboxing” in his book Cold Equator, which later became a real-world competitive sport.
Active in others filds : Film Directing (directed feature films including Bunker Palace Hôtel, Tykho Moon, and Immortel, ad vitam), Theatrical Set and Costume Design (for ballet and opera), Concept Art.
