三浦 建太郎 (Manga / Kanji) Kentaro Miura (Unmarried; survived by his immediate family and close circle of studio assistants at Studio Gaga) was a master manga artist and illustrator whose dark fantasy epic Berserk reshaped international pop culture and set an absolute gold standard for intricate, hand-drawn sequential art. Blessed with a rare combination of cinematic storytelling prowess and a hyper-detailed drawing style, Miura is widely regarded as one of the most technically accomplished graphic illustrators of the modern era.
Born in Chiba, Japan, Miura’s artistic trajectory began incredibly early. At just ten years old, he created his very first manga, Miuranger, for his school classmates, eventually filling 40 volumes. He entered the fine arts program at Nihon University, where his graduation project earned him a nomination for the prestigious Best New Artist award in Weekly Shōnen Magazine.
In 1988, Miura published a 48-page prototype that would alter the course of his life and the fantasy genre: Berserk Prototype. A year later, the official serialization of Berserk began. The story followed Guts, a tragic, heavily armored mercenary wielding a colossal sword, navigating a brutal, morally grey world plagued by demonic forces.
Miura’s art style evolved into something unprecedented within the manga medium. Shunning shorthand or simplified backgrounds, he utilized meticulous, dense cross-hatching, fine pen lines, and precise ink washes to build textures that mirrored classical European etchings, Gustave Doré’s engravings, and Bosch-like hellscapes. His splash pages frequently featured thousands of individual ink strokes to capture the glint of steel, the visceral splatter of mud and blood, or the cosmic horror of grand scale architecture. He spent decades working up to 14 hours a day, pushing his physical limits to ensure that not a single frame or background texture was compromised.
Tragically, on May 6, 2021, Miura passed away unexpectedly due to an acute aortic dissection at the age of 54. His sudden passing shook the global artistic community. Following his death, his lifelong friend and fellow manga creator, Kouji Mori, stepped forward alongside Miura’s hand-picked assistants at Studio Gaga to continue the serialization of Berserk, using the extensive plot notes, character designs, and ending layouts that Miura had shared with them before his passing.
