Lorenzo Quinn (born 1966) is a leading contemporary Italian sculptor renowned for his expressive figurative works, particularly his monumental recreations of human hands. Born in Rome as the son of legendary actor Anthony Quinn, he was raised between Italy and the United States, an upbringing that deeply influenced his artistic sensibilities.
Quinn initially pursued painting at the American Academy of Fine Arts in New York, intending to become a Surrealist painter. However, at the age of 21, he discovered a profound connection to sculpture after creating a piece depicting Eve emerging from Adam’s torso. He realized that the three-dimensional medium better accommodated his energy and his desire to transmit “eternal values and authentic emotions.”
He is most famous for his focus on the human hand, which he considers the most technically challenging and powerful part of the body. His most iconic public installation, Support (2017), featured two massive white hands emerging from the Grand Canal in Venice to bolster the Ca’ Sagredo Hotel, a powerful visual statement on climate change and the fragility of the city. Other major works include Building Bridges (2019) and the Forces of Nature series, which depicts Mother Nature rotating the Earth with a sling.
Quinn’s work is heavily inspired by classical masters such as Michelangelo, Bernini, and Rodin, yet it maintains a modern accessibility through its symbolic objects and universal messages of love, balance, and human connection.
