Milo Manara is a globally renowned Italian comic book writer and artist, widely celebrated as one of the undisputed masters of erotic comic art. Originally drawn to architecture and painting, Manara debuted in the comics industry in 1969, illustrating the Genius series, a popular Italian fumetto nero that combined elements of crime and eroticism.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Manara refined his clear-line (Ligne Claire) style, heavily influenced by his mentor and frequent collaborator, the legendary Hugo Pratt. Together, they created highly acclaimed historical graphic novels such as Indian Summer and El Gaucho. Manara’s international breakthrough as a solo creator came in 1983 with Click (Il Gioco), a satirical and explicitly erotic comic that cemented his reputation for illustrating idealized, sensuous women with exceptional anatomical grace and fluid linework. His series HP and Giuseppe Bergman further showcased his surreal, adventurous storytelling.
Beyond his solo work, Manara has collaborated with some of the most prominent figures in film and literature. He worked closely with legendary Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini, translating Fellini’s unproduced scripts into the graphic novels Trip to Tulum and The Voyage of G. Mastorna. He also collaborated with filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky on the decadent historical epic Borgia, and contributed to Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman: Endless Nights for DC/Vertigo.
In the 21st century, Manara expanded his reach into the American mainstream comic book market. He collaborated with Chris Claremont on X-Men: Girls’ School and produced numerous high-profile variant covers for Marvel Comics. His enduring legacy lies in his ability to elevate erotic illustration into fine art through masterful draftsmanship, elegant inking, and sophisticated storytelling.
