This image features the Millennium Dome (The O2) in London, a landmark of High-Tech architecture designed by Richard Rogers.

  • Structure: It is a massive tensioned membrane structure supported by 12 yellow masts, representing the months of the year and the hours on a clock face.

  • Design Philosophy: True to Rogers’ style, the building’s “skeleton”—its cables and supports—is proudly displayed on the outside as a form of industrial art.

  • Visuals: The side-by-side view highlights its transformation from a golden silhouette at sunset to a glowing, futuristic icon reflected in the River Thames at night.

It remains one of the most recognizable examples of Rogers’ ability to merge large-scale engineering with bold, functional aesthetics.

Keep Reading About

Richard Rogers

Richard George Rogers, Baron Rogers of Riverside (Parents: William Nino Rogers and Dada Rogers; Spouses: Su Brumwell, Ruth Elias; Children: Ben, Zad, Ab, Roo, and Bo)  was a visionary British-Italian architect whose “High-Tech” designs transformed the skylines of the world’s major cities. He is best known for his “inside-out” philosophy, where the functional elements of a building—such as stairs, elevators, and water pipes—are placed on the exterior to maximize flexible space within.

Born in Florence to an Anglo-Italian family, Rogers struggled with dyslexia during his early schooling but found his calling in architecture. After studying at the Architectural Association in London and Yale University, he formed “Team 4” with his first wife, Su Brumwell, and fellow architects Wendy Cheesman and Norman Foster.

His international breakthrough came in 1971 when he and Italian architect Renzo Piano won the competition to design the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The building was initially controversial for its exposed, brightly colored mechanical systems, but it eventually became a global icon and a catalyst for the regeneration of the surrounding district. Rogers followed this success with the Lloyd’s Building in London (1986), a “cathedral of technology” that solidified his reputation as a master of industrial aesthetics.

Throughout his career, Rogers was a passionate advocate for sustainable urbanism and social responsibility. He believed that architecture should serve the public and enhance city life, a philosophy evident in projects like the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, the Millennium Dome in London, and the Barajas Airport Terminal 4 in Madrid.

In 2007, he was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the industry’s highest honor. Rogers was knighted in 1991 and made a life peer in 1996, allowing him to champion urban planning and environmental issues within the UK House of Lords.

Active in others filds : Urban Planning, Political Advocacy (Urban Task Force), Furniture Design.
