Born Stanley Martin Lieber to Jewish-Romanian immigrants in Manhattan, he entered the comic industry in 1939 as an assistant at Timely Comics (the precursor to Marvel). By age 19, he became the youngest interim editor, marking the start of a legendary career that would span nearly 80 years.

After serving in the U.S. Army during WWII, Lee returned to a shifting comic industry.
