Charles-Théodore Frère (Father: A Paris music publisher; Brother: Pierre-Édouard Frère, a successful genre painter; Nephew: Charles Edouard Frère, also an artist)(1814–1888) was a pioneering French painter and a defining figure of the 19th-century Orientalist movement. Unlike many of his contemporaries who painted varied subjects, Frère dedicated almost his entire artistic career to capturing the landscapes, cities, and daily life of North Africa and the Middle East.

Frère initially studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the landscape artists Jules Coignet and Camille Roqueplan. He debuted at the Paris Salon in 1834 with regional French landscapes. However, his artistic trajectory changed forever after he traveled to Algeria around 1836, shortly after the French conquest of the region. Captivated by the brilliant sunlight, the vibrant culture, and the arid environments, he began painting exclusively Orientalist themes, becoming one of the first artists of his generation to commit entirely to the genre.

Over the following decades, Frère traveled extensively throughout the Near and Middle East, visiting Malta, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Palestine, and Nubia. He was among the very few Western artists of his era to paint Beirut, Damascus, and the ancient ruins of Palmyra. Egypt, however, became his primary muse. In 1853, he set up a permanent studio in Cairo and was appointed as a court painter to the Viceroy of Egypt. He was held in such high esteem by the Ottoman rulers that he was elevated to the prestigious rank of “Bey” and named an Officer of the Order of the Medjidie.

In 1869, his career reached a pinnacle when he was invited to join the official entourage of the French Empress Eugénie—alongside other leading Orientalists like Jean-Léon Gérôme and Eugène Fromentin—to witness the historic inauguration of the Suez Canal. He painted a series of watercolors documenting the royal voyage down the Nile. Frère won numerous awards during his lifetime, including a first-class medal at the 1865 Salon, and his atmospheric depictions of blazing sunsets, Bedouin encampments, and vast deserts remain highly sought after by collectors and museums today.
