Seyed Ziaeddin Emami Dehkordi | سید ضیاءالدین امامی دهکردی |  (Son of Ayatollah Seyed Mohammad Baqer Emami Najafi Dehkordi and Begum Khanom Emami) was a pioneering contemporary Iranian painter and the founder of the “School of Light” (Maktab-e Nour) and the “Emamiyeh” style. Born in Shahrekord into a distinguished religious family, he migrated to Isfahan in 1935, where he studied at the Isfahan School of Fine Arts under Master Isa Bahadori. His early career was marked by academic training in traditional Iranian arts, but his style underwent a major transformation in the 1960s at the Faculty of Decorative Arts in Tehran, where he was a contemporary of the Saqqa-khaneh movement pioneers.

Emami’s artistic philosophy was deeply rooted in Islamic wisdom and mysticism (Hikmat), viewing art as a form of spiritual discovery and “visual music”. He is renowned for integrating Quranic verses and traditional motifs into modern, multi-layered geometric compositions where light emanates from within the forms. His masterpiece, “Tasbih-e Zarrat” (Glorification of Particles), won the Golden Brush at the 1995 Tehran Painting Biennial. His most ambitious project was the creation of the world’s first “Visual Quran”—a continuous 70-meter scroll that took over 20 years to complete, translating all 30 parts of the Quran into light and color. He dedicated decades to teaching at the Tehran University of Art and the University of Art Isfahan before passing away in Isfahan in 2008.

Artistic Style and Career:
Ziaeddin Emami was a prolific yet reclusive figure in contemporary Iranian art, deliberately distancing himself from media publicity and the commercial art market. Beyond financial challenges, his artistic seclusion and reluctance to market his work stemmed primarily from strict personal ethics and a conscious avoidance of self-ostentation. This principled approach, combined with severe spatial constraints, directly dictated the scale of his oeuvre; consequently, the vast majority of Emami’s works were executed on a small scale, and many remained unexhibited to the public during his lifetime.

In his final years, despite severe limitations of space, Emami remained indefatigably active. He relocated his practice to the basement of his daughter’s residence in Isfahan, where he continued to create art until the end of his life.

Emami’s primary technique involved working with gouache and watercolor on cardboard. Stylistically, his work can be characterized as a form of hieroglyphic symbolism. His compositions relied on a combination of semi-abstract human symbols and figures, integrated with an inventive, stylized calligraphy of his own creation. This juxtaposition of imagery and text formed a sequential narrative structure reminiscent of comic books or graphic stories; however, the arrangement possessed a cryptic and enigmatic quality, where the unique calligraphic elements and visual motifs concurrently mapped out a distinct narrative path.

This lack of access to large studio spaces stood in sharp contrast to the inherent scale of his artistic vision. Art historians and critics have frequently noted that Emami’s compositions and visual structures possessed an intrinsic grandeur, showing immense potential for large-scale execution, such as murals. Experts maintain that had his works been realized on a grander scale, his sophisticated command over space and form would have been far more effectively and tangibly demonstrated to both the art community and the general public.
