Todd McFarlane (Spouse: Wanda McFarlane; Children: Cyan, Kate, and Jake)
Todd McFarlane (born 1961) is a Canadian comic book creator, artist, writer, and entrepreneur, widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in the modern comic book industry. His highly detailed, hyper-dynamic, and often dark artistic style came to define the look of mainstream comics in the late 1980s and 1990s.

McFarlane broke into the industry in the mid-1980s, working for DC Comics on titles like Infinity, Inc. and Batman: Year Two. However, his superstar status was cemented when he took over the art duties for Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man in 1988. McFarlane completely revolutionized the character’s visual identity, introducing larger, more expressive eyes, contorted, spider-like poses, and the intricate, chaotic “spaghetti webbing” that remains a staple of the character today. During this run, he also co-created the iconic anti-hero Venom. His subsequent adjectiveless Spider-Man #1 (1990), which he both wrote and drew, sold over 2.5 million copies, setting an industry record at the time.

In 1992, frustrated by the lack of creator rights, intellectual property ownership, and editorial control at the major publishers, McFarlane and six other superstar artists (including Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, and Rob Liefeld) defected from Marvel to found Image Comics. This historical move permanently altered the comic book landscape by establishing a sanctuary for creator-owned properties.

For Image, McFarlane launched his own dark fantasy series, Spawn. Spawn #1 sold 1.7 million copies and became a massive cultural phenomenon. The property expanded into an Emmy Award-winning HBO animated series and a live-action feature film. In 2019, Spawn reached issue #301, officially making it the longest-running creator-owned superhero comic book in history, earning McFarlane a Guinness World Record.

Beyond the printed page, McFarlane is a trailblazing entrepreneur. In 1994, dissatisfied with the quality of action figures based on his characters, he founded McFarlane Toys. The company revolutionized the global toy industry by setting a new, unprecedented standard for highly articulated, meticulously sculpted, and mature-themed collectibles, eventually acquiring massive licenses for sports leagues, video games, and film franchises.

Active in others filds : Toy Design and Manufacturing (Founder and CEO of McFarlane Toys), Film and Television Production (Todd McFarlane Entertainment), Music Video Direction (notably the animated videos for Pearl Jam’s “Do the Evolution” and Korn’s “Freak on a Leash”).
