Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky (Parents: Wassily Kandinsky Sr., a tea merchant, and Lidia Ticheeva; Spouses: Anna Chimiyakina, Gabriele Münter, Nina Andreevskaya) Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist who is widely credited with painting one of the first purely abstract works in modern art. His career moved from figurative representation to the development of a visual language based on the psychological power of color and form, which he likened to the structure of musical composition.
Born into a middle-class family in Moscow, Kandinsky initially pursued a career in law and economics. It was not until he was 30 years old, following a successful academic career, that he chose to devote himself to painting. This late start allowed him to bring a highly intellectual and philosophical rigor to his artistic practice. He studied in Munich, where he began to move away from the representational traditions of the 19th century.
Kandinsky believed that art should not merely depict the physical world but should resonate with the “internal necessity” of the human soul. In 1911, he co-founded Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group, a collection of artists who shared his interest in spirituality, symbolism, and the rejection of traditional academic constraints. During this period, his work shifted toward intense, non-objective color schemes and complex geometric structures.
In 1922, Kandinsky joined the Bauhaus school in Weimar, Germany. His time at the Bauhaus saw his style evolve into a more disciplined, geometric abstraction. He focused on the interplay between lines, circles, and contrasting colors, believing these elements held universal spiritual meanings. When the Nazi party closed the Bauhaus in 1933, Kandinsky emigrated to France, where he spent his final years, producing works that featured more biomorphic, microscopic, and surreal forms. Beyond his paintings, his theoretical books—most notably Concerning the Spiritual in Art (1911)—remained foundational texts for the development of modern abstract art globally.
