Alfonso Williamson (Spouse: Cori Williamson)
Alfonso “Al” Williamson (1931–2010) was a legendary American comic book artist and illustrator, celebrated for his elegant, classical draftsmanship and his masterful, highly detailed linework. Born in New York but raised in Bogotá, Colombia, Williamson discovered the medium through South American editions of Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon comic strips, which profoundly shaped his artistic trajectory and instilled in him a lifelong love for romantic, swashbuckling science fiction.
Returning to the United States in his teens, he took classes at the Cartoonists and Illustrators School (later the School of Visual Arts) under the instruction of Burne Hogarth. By the early 1950s, Williamson had become one of the youngest and most prominent artists for EC Comics, contributing lush, atmospheric artwork to legendary science fiction titles like Weird Science and Weird Fantasy. His style—characterized by romantic realism, delicate feathering, and dramatic chiaroscuro—set a high watermark for the era. He frequently collaborated with a tight-knit group of fellow artists known as the “Fleagle Gang,” which included Frank Frazetta and Roy Krenkel.

Williamson’s lifelong dream was realized in the 1960s when he was selected to draw the Flash Gordon comic books, winning a National Cartoonists Society award for his work. His unmatched mastery of the space-fantasy aesthetic later made him the natural choice for George Lucas when Marvel Comics adapted Star Wars. Williamson drew the highly acclaimed comic adaptations of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as the Star Wars daily newspaper strip, establishing the definitive visual translation of the cinematic universe into sequential art.
In his later career, Williamson transitioned primarily into the role of an inker. His precise, elegant touch elevated the pencil work of numerous top-tier artists across both Marvel and DC, bringing his classical polish to titles like Daredevil and Spider-Man 2099. He is remembered today as an “artist’s artist” who successfully bridged the gap between the golden age of newspaper adventure strips and modern comic book illustration.
