Anders Zorn

Anders Leonard Zorn (Father: Leonhard Zorn, a German brewer; Mother: Grudd Anna Andersdotter; Spouse: Emma Lamm)Im
Anders Leonard Zorn (1860–1920) was one of Sweden’s foremost artists, achieving international fame as a painter, sculptor, and printmaker. Alongside his contemporary John Singer Sargent, Zorn was widely considered one of the most sought-after and brilliant portrait painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Born in the rural parish of Mora in Dalarna, Sweden, Zorn was raised by his mother and grandparents. He demonstrated early artistic talent, initially in woodcarving, before enrolling at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm in 1875. He began his career focusing on watercolor, where he achieved rapid success, but later transitioned to masterful oil painting and etching.

Zorn traveled extensively, spending significant time in London and Paris, where he was influenced by the loose brushwork and lighting of the Impressionist movement. His mastery of depicting light, the reflective qualities of water, and human anatomy became his signature. He is particularly celebrated for his plein-air paintings of rustic life in Dalarna—most famously his vibrant depictions of local festivals—and his luminous, naturalistic nudes bathing in the Swedish landscape.

His stellar reputation as a portraitist brought him immense commercial success in the United States, a country he visited several times. He received high-profile commissions to paint prominent figures of high society, industry, and politics, including three U.S. Presidents: Grover Cleveland, William Howard Taft, and Theodore Roosevelt.

For visual artists today, Zorn is famously associated with the “Zorn Palette,” a limited color palette traditionally consisting of only four pigments: Flake White (Lead White), Yellow Ochre, Vermilion, and Ivory Black. Despite this highly restricted range, Zorn was able to achieve an astonishing variety of warm and cool skin tones. His technique remains a fundamental study for modern figurative painters and classical ateliers worldwide.

He eventually returned to his hometown of Mora with his wife, Emma. Together, they became major cultural patrons, dedicated to preserving local folklore, architecture, and crafts. They left their estate and extensive art collection to the Swedish state, which is now the Zorn Museum.
