Eduardo Chillida

Eduardo Chillida Juantegui (Parents: Pedro Chillida and Carmen Juantegui; Spouse: Pilar Belzunce; He had eight children)

Eduardo Chillida (1924–2002) was a world-renowned Basque sculptor famous for his monumental, abstract works in iron, steel, and stone that explore the relationship between space, matter, and the void. Before becoming an artist, Chillida was a talented goalkeeper for Real Sociedad, but a serious knee injury ended his football career and led him toward architecture and eventually sculpture.

After a brief period in Paris (1948), where he worked in plaster and clay influenced by Greek archaic sculpture, Chillida returned to the Basque Country and began working with iron at a local forge. This move was pivotal; he abandoned figurative work for a rugged, organic abstraction that mirrored the industrial heritage and coastline of his homeland.

His work is characterized by a “dialogue with the horizon.” One of his most iconic installations is Peine del Viento (The Comb of the Wind), a series of massive steel sculptures anchored into the rocks of the Bay of La Concha in San Sebastián. These pieces “comb” the wind and waves, merging the industrial strength of the material with the raw power of nature.

Chillida’s philosophy was deeply rooted in the concept of “interstitial space”—the space between objects. Whether working with massive blocks of steel or translucent alabaster, he treated space as a physical material to be shaped and carved. Over his career, he received numerous international accolades, including the Grand Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale (1958) and the Wolf Prize in Arts (1984/85). In 2000, he realized his dream of creating Chillida Leku, an open-air museum in Hernani dedicated to his life’s work.

Active in others filds : Architecture (Early studies), Drawing, Printmaking (Etching/Lithography), Professional Football (Real Sociedad Goalkeeper).
