George Pérez (Parents: Jorge and Luz Maria Pérez; Spouse: Carol Flynn) | George Pérez (1954–2022) was an American comic book artist and writer, universally regarded as one of the definitive and most beloved superhero illustrators in the history of the medium. Renowned for his exceptionally clean, detailed line work and his unparalleled ability to render complex scenes featuring dozens—sometimes hundreds—of distinct characters, his style became the gold standard for epic comic book storytelling.
Born in the South Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, Pérez began his professional career at Marvel Comics in the 1970s, making an early mark on flagship titles like The Avengers and Fantastic Four. However, he reached superstar status in 1980 after moving to DC Comics to partner with writer Marv Wolfman on The New Teen Titans. The series became a massive critical and commercial phenomenon, rivaling Marvel’s X-Men in popularity.
In 1985, Pérez illustrated the groundbreaking 12-issue miniseries Crisis on Infinite Earths, a massive crossover event that restructured the entire DC Universe. Following this monumental task, he spearheaded the 1987 reboot of Wonder Woman as both writer and artist. By closely tying the character to her Greek mythological roots and redesigning her world, Pérez created what is widely considered the definitive modern interpretation of the heroine.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Pérez continued to produce magnum opuses for both major publishers, notably illustrating Marvel’s cosmic epic The Infinity Gauntlet (1991) and achieving a career-long dream by meticulously illustrating the blockbuster JLA/Avengers intercompany crossover (2003–2004).
Beyond his artwork, Pérez was known for his joyous personality, his bright Hawaiian shirts, and his immense generosity with fans. He was a staunch supporter of the Hero Initiative, a charity dedicated to helping comic creators in financial need. He formally retired in 2019 due to failing eyesight and health issues, passing away from pancreatic cancer in 2022. He left behind a legacy of absolute mastery in the sequential art medium.
