John Salvatore Romita Jr. (Father: John Romita Sr., legendary comic artist; Mother: Virginia Romita; Spouse: Tara Romita)
John Salvatore Romita Jr. (born 1956), widely known in the industry by his initials JRJR, is an American comic book artist renowned for his extensive, defining work for Marvel Comics from the 1970s to the modern era. Born into comic book royalty, he is the son of the legendary artist John Romita Sr., who co-created defining elements of the Spider-Man mythos.

Despite the long shadow of his father’s legacy, Romita Jr. forged a distinctly unique path and aesthetic. He began his career at Marvel UK, contributing cover sketches. His first major American run was on Iron Man in 1978 with writer David Michelinie and inker Bob Layton, where he co-created the definitive “Demon in a Bottle” storyline.
By the 1980s and 1990s, JRJR had solidified his signature visual style: a highly kinetic, geometric, and “blocky” approach to anatomy, characterized by heavy parallel hatching, deep shadows, and unparalleled dynamic action pacing. This gritty aesthetic perfectly suited his celebrated runs on Uncanny X-Men (with Chris Claremont), The Punisher War Zone, and Daredevil. For the latter, he teamed up with Frank Miller to create the definitive origin miniseries The Man Without Fear (1993), where Romita Jr. designed the iconic black ninja suit.
In the 2000s, Romita Jr. became a cornerstone artist for The Amazing Spider-Man, collaborating with writer J. Michael Straczynski to introduce characters like Morlun and Ezekiel. Outside the mainstream superhero universe, he co-created the creator-owned blockbuster Kick-Ass with writer Mark Millar in 2008. The hyper-violent deconstruction of superhero tropes was a massive success and was subsequently adapted into a Hollywood film franchise.
In 2014, after decades of exclusive work with Marvel, Romita Jr. signed with DC Comics to draw Superman, working alongside writer Geoff Johns. He eventually returned to Marvel in the 2020s to celebrate major publishing milestones, cementing his legacy as one of the most prolific, consistent, and recognizable sequential storytellers in comic book history.
