Norman Robert Foster (Title: Baron Foster of Thames Bank; Spouse: Elena Ochoa; He has been married three times) Norman Foster is one of the most prolific and influential architects of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. A key figure in the “High-Tech” architectural movement, his work is characterized by the use of advanced industrial technology, glass-and-steel structures, and a commitment to environmental sustainability.
Raised in a working-class family in Manchester, Foster served in the Royal Air Force before studying architecture and city planning at the University of Manchester. He later earned a master’s degree at Yale University on a fellowship, where he met his future partner Richard Rogers. In 1967, after a brief partnership called “Team 4,” he established Foster Associates (now Foster + Partners).
Foster’s breakthrough came with the Willis Faber & Dumas headquarters in Ipswich (1975), which featured a revolutionary glass curtain wall. He achieved global fame with the HSBC Main Building in Hong Kong (1986), a structure that “turned the skyscraper inside out” by placing its support structure on the exterior to create vast, open interior spaces.
His iconic contributions to global skylines include 30 St Mary Axe (The Gherkin) in London, the restoration of the Reichstag in Berlin (featuring its famous glass dome), and the Hearst Tower in New York City. Foster is also the architect behind massive infrastructure projects like the Hong Kong International Airport and the Millau Viaduct in France, the tallest bridge in the world.
Throughout his career, Foster has pushed for “green” architecture, integrating energy-saving technologies and natural light into massive urban structures. He has received over 470 awards, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize (1999) and the Praemium Imperiale. He was knighted in 1990 and appointed to the Order of Merit in 1997.
