手塚 治虫 (Pen name) / 手塚 治 (Birth name) | Osamu Tezuka (Parents: Yutaka and Fumiko Tezuka; Spouse: Etsuko Okada; Children: Makoto Tezuka, a film director, Rumiko, and Chiiko)
Osamu Tezuka (1928–1989) is universally revered as the “God of Manga” (Manga no Kamisama) and the “Father of Anime.” His pioneering techniques and prolific output fundamentally reshaped the landscape of Japanese popular culture, laying the foundation for the modern manga and anime industries.
Born in Osaka, Tezuka developed a passion for drawing and animation at a very young age, deeply influenced by Walt Disney and Max Fleischer cartoons. He began his professional career in 1946 while still a medical student. His breakthrough work, New Treasure Island (1947), revolutionized Japanese comics by introducing cinematic techniques to the medium. Instead of flat, stage-like panels, Tezuka utilized dynamic angles, panning shots, and multi-page action sequences, creating what became known as “Story Manga.”
Tezuka’s creativity was boundless, resulting in a staggering output of over 700 manga series and 150,000 pages of art throughout his life. He created iconic characters that became global cultural ambassadors, most notably Astro Boy (Tetsuwan Atom). First serialized in 1952, Astro Boy explored complex themes of artificial intelligence, prejudice, and humanity’s relationship with technology.
His other seminal works include Kimba the White Lion (the first full-color Japanese animated TV series), Princess Knight (which laid the groundwork for the shōjo genre), and the dark, medical drama Black Jack. His magnum opus, however, is widely considered to be Phoenix (Hi no Tori), an epic, philosophical saga spanning from the dawn of human history to the distant future, which he worked on for decades until his death.
In addition to sequential art, Tezuka was a trailblazer in animation. He founded Mushi Production in 1961, establishing the aesthetics and cost-saving production techniques—such as limited animation—that defined the anime industry. Even though he earned a medical degree from Osaka University and became a licensed physician, he chose to dedicate his life to visual storytelling, using his medical knowledge to enrich the realism of works like Black Jack. He passed away from stomach cancer in 1989, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy.
