William Erwin Eisner (Parents: Samuel Eisner and Fannie Ingber; Spouse: Ann Weingarten; Children: Alice and John)
Will Eisner (1917–2005) was a foundational pioneer of the American comic book industry, widely recognized as one of the most innovative and influential visual storytellers of the 20th century. His groundbreaking techniques in panel layout, dramatic lighting, and cinematic framing fundamentally elevated comics from simple disposable entertainment into a respected, mature art form.
Eisner began his career in the 1930s, co-founding the Eisner & Iger studio, which produced comics for various publishers during the Golden Age of Comic Books. In 1940, he created his most famous character, The Spirit, a masked crime-fighter whose weekly newspaper insert allowed Eisner to experiment wildly with narrative structure. In The Spirit, he masterfully employed film noir aesthetics, dramatic chiaroscuro lighting, and bold, integrated typography—often weaving the title lettering seamlessly into the cityscapes and architecture of the opening splash pages.
During World War II and for decades after, Eisner utilized sequential art for educational purposes, heavily contributing to the U.S. Army’s instructional magazine, PS, The Preventive Maintenance Monthly, proving that the comic medium was highly effective for technical instruction and adult education.
In 1978, Eisner revolutionized the publishing world with A Contract with God, and Other Tenement Stories. By branding it a “Graphic Novel,” he helped popularize the term and birthed the modern era of long-form, mature, and deeply personal comic storytelling. He also codified the grammar of the medium in his essential instructional books, most notably Comics and Sequential Art (1985) and Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative (1996), which remain required reading for visual artists globally.
In recognition of his unparalleled contributions, the comic industry’s equivalent of the Academy Awards—the Eisner Awards—were named in his honor and are presented annually at San Diego Comic-Con.
