About & Heritage
The National Museum of Ireland (NMI) is the premier national cultural institution in Ireland, maintaining extensive collections across archaeology, decorative arts, history, and natural science. Established in its current form in 1890, the museum unified several older, prestigious collections, including those from the Royal Dublin Society and the Royal Irish Academy. Today, the NMI operates across four main sites, serving as the cultural anchor of the nation. The museum’s mission is to collect, preserve, promote, and exhibit the material culture and natural history of Ireland, fostering a deep public understanding of the nation’s heritage. The flagship Archaeology branch on Kildare Street is a breathtaking Victorian Palladian building designed by Thomas Newenham Deane, renowned for its majestic rotunda and intricate mosaic floors. Within its walls, the museum safeguards world-famous masterpieces of Celtic and medieval art, including the Ardagh Chalice and the Tara Brooch, as well as an internationally significant collection of prehistoric gold and Iron Age bog bodies. Functioning as the primary repository for all archaeological objects found in Ireland, the National Museum plays a pivotal role in historical research and conservation, serving as the definitive guardian of Ireland’s extraordinary cultural legacy and providing a free, world-class educational experience for a diverse global audience.
- Note : The National Museum of Ireland operates across multiple branches: Archaeology on Kildare Street, Decorative Arts & History at Collins Barracks, Natural History on Merrion Street, and Country Life in County Mayo. This profile predominantly reflects the flagship Archaeology and primary Dublin sites.
