Albert Bierstadt (Father: Henry Bierstadt; Mother: Christina Bierstadt; Brother: Edward Bierstadt, a famous photographer; Spouse: Rosalie Ludlow)
Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902) was a German-American painter best known for his sweeping, majestic landscapes of the American West. He was a key figure in the second generation of the Hudson River School and is often associated with the Rocky Mountain School of painters.

Though born in Germany, Bierstadt moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts, as an infant. He returned to Europe in 1853 to study painting at the Düsseldorf School, where he mastered a highly detailed, technical style. Upon his return to America, he joined several westward expeditions, including the Frederick W. Lander survey in 1859. These trips allowed him to sketch the rugged peaks and vast valleys of the Rockies and Yosemite, which he would later transform into massive, “operatic” canvases in his New York studio.

Bierstadt’s work is characterized by Luminism—a style that emphasizes the effects of light, often depicting glowing atmospheres, dramatic clouds, and misty mountains. His paintings, such as The Rocky Mountains, Lander’s Peak (1863) and Among the Sierra Nevada, California (1868), played a crucial role in shaping the American public’s romanticized vision of the West. His canvases were often enormous, sometimes requiring a theatrical unveiling to audiences who paid admission to see them.

While he enjoyed immense wealth and fame during the mid-19th century, his popularity waned toward the end of his life as art critics began to favor the more intimate, less “theatrical” styles of the Barbizon School and Impressionism. Despite this, Bierstadt remains one of the most significant chroniclers of the American wilderness.
