Francisco Ibáñez Talavera | Francisco Ibáñez Talavera (Spouse: Remedios Solera; Daughters: Nuria and Sonia)
Francisco Ibáñez Talavera (1936–2023) was arguably the most famous and prolific Spanish comic book artist in history, widely celebrated as the creator of the iconic comic series Mortadelo y Filemón (known internationally as Mort & Phil). His work defined the childhoods of multiple generations in Spain and Latin America, establishing him as a titan of European humor comics.

Born in Barcelona, Ibáñez showed a strong affinity for drawing from a young age. He initially worked as an accounting assistant at a bank while moonlighting as a cartoonist, publishing his early drawings in various humor magazines. In 1957, he made the leap to full-time illustration by joining Editorial Bruguera, the absolute powerhouse of Spanish comic publishing at the time.

In 1958, he debuted Mortadelo y Filemón in the magazine Pulgarcito. The series follows the disastrous, chaotic adventures of two inept secret agents working for the T.I.A. (a spoof of the CIA). What started as short, slapstick strips evolved by the late 1960s into 44-page graphic novels featuring intricate plots, sharp social satire, and a relentless barrage of visual gags. Ibáñez’s signature drawing style is instantly recognizable for its frenetic energy, highly expressive character designs, and backgrounds densely packed with absurd, hidden details (such as a mouse smoking a cigar or an eggplant with a face).

Ibáñez was a remarkably prolific creator. Beyond Mort & Phil, he populated the Spanish pop culture landscape with a massive roster of beloved series, including 13, Rue del Percebe (a brilliant cross-section view of an absurd apartment building), Rompetechos (a catastrophically nearsighted man, whom Ibáñez considered his favorite character), El botones Sacarino, and Pepe Gotera y Otilio.

During the 1980s, the bankruptcy of Editorial Bruguera caused Ibáñez to temporarily lose the rights to his own characters, though he successfully regained them by the end of the decade. He continued writing and illustrating his comics well into his 80s, famously adapting his characters to satirize current events, political elections, and the Olympic Games. He passed away in 2023, leaving behind a monumental legacy of over 30,000 published comic pages and millions of dedicated readers.
