Aqa Reza (Father: Ali Asghar, a master painter in the Safavid royal atelier)
Reza Abbasi (c. 1565–1635) was the most renowned Persian miniaturist, painter, and calligrapher of the later Safavid period. He was the defining figure of the “Isfahan School” of art, flourishing under the patronage of Shah Abbas I.

Born Aqa Reza to a father who was already an established artist at the royal court, he received classical training in traditional Persian manuscript illustration. However, Reza Abbasi revolutionized the medium. Rather than focusing on complex, densely populated illustrations for grand epic texts like the Shahnameh, he popularized single-page, stand-alone portraits and drawings. These individual works were highly sought after by wealthy patrons and assembled into beautifully bound albums known as muraqqas.

His preferred subjects included elegant, idealized youths, cupbearers, languid lovers, and ascetic dervishes. Abbasi is celebrated for his unparalleled, calligraphic line work. He used varying thicknesses of ink to convey a deep sense of volume, texture, and graceful movement. His refined use of color frequently employed soft, subtle washes alongside brilliant, solid pigments and lavish gold detailing.

Despite his high status and the royal honorific “Abbasi” bestowed upon him by the Shah, historical accounts indicate he had a rebellious streak. In his mid-career, he temporarily abandoned the strictures of the royal court to associate with ordinary people, wrestlers, and street dervishes. This period of his life brought a new sense of grounded realism and psychological depth to his later character studies.

Reza Abbasi’s legacy profoundly shaped the trajectory of Persian visual arts. His signature aesthetics—particularly his fluid, rhythmic line drawings and expressive figures—became the definitive standard for artists in Iran for generations following his death in 1635.
