Hans Holbein (Father: Michael Holbein; Brother: Sigmund Holbein; Sons: Hans Holbein the Younger and Ambrosius Holbein, both notable artists)
Hans Holbein the Elder (c. 1460–1524) was a pivotal German painter and draughtsman who stood at the artistic crossroads between the Late Gothic and the Northern Renaissance. Based primarily in the wealthy imperial city of Augsburg, he headed a large and productive workshop that specialized in monumental altarpieces and religious narratives.
Holbein’s early style was rooted in the Flemish-influenced Late Gothic tradition, characterized by slender figures and rich, decorative detail. However, as the Renaissance spread northward from Italy, his work began to incorporate classical architectural elements and a more profound sense of spatial depth and realism. His major commissions, such as the Kaisheim Altarpiece (1502) and the Basilica of St. Paul (1504), demonstrate this transition toward a more naturalistic representation of the human form.
Beyond his large-scale paintings, Holbein the Elder was a supreme master of silverpoint drawing. He produced a vast series of portrait sketches of his contemporaries, family members, and fellow citizens of Augsburg. These drawings are celebrated for their clinical precision, psychological depth, and delicate linework. They served not only as studies for his paintings but also as a foundational training ground for his son, Hans Holbein the Younger, who would eventually become one of the greatest portraitists in Western history.
In his later years, Holbein’s career faced challenges due to shifting artistic tastes and financial difficulties. He eventually left Augsburg and moved to Alsace, where he worked on projects like the altarpiece for the monastery in Issenheim. Although his fame was eventually eclipsed by his son’s international success at the court of Henry VIII, Hans Holbein the Elder remains an essential figure in German art for introducing Renaissance humanist values into the traditional Gothic framework.
